Alan Shearer
Shearer made an instant name for himself in English football as he scored a hat trick on his debut for Southampton in 1988 against Arsenal at the age of seventeen. Shearer soon cemented his place in the first eleven at Southampton and really came in to the fore of the team during the 1990 – 1991 season. He spent four years with the saints, scoring 23 goals in 118 appearances. He signed for Blackburn at the start of the 1992 – 93 season and his goals helped the club in the league title in 1995. He scored a staggering 112 goals in 138 appearances for Blackburn before moving to Newcastle United for £15 million and went on to break records at the club as highest goal scorer. He played for England during Euro 92, Euro 96, Euro 2000 and the 1998 world cup finals.
Mickey Adams
Adams began his career off playing for Gillingham between 1979 and 1983 before moving to Coventry City in 1983. At Coventry he spent four years with the club. He signed for Southampton in 1989 for £250,000 and played in either the left back position or in midfield. He later on went in to management, embarking on a successful managerial career with various clubs, including Coventry City, Leicester City and Southampton.
Francis Benali
Benali is without doubt considered a legend in Southampton. He spent nearly his entire career playing for the club between 1988 and 2002. He was a tough tackling defender who was always an assured presence in the Southampton back line. In total, Benali made over 300 appearances for the club as they were in the top flight of English football throughout his stay. |
